In 2017 the majority of Australians voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, which opened up more immigration opportunities for people in same-sex relationships with Australians. This includes partner visas on the basis of marriage and prospective marriage visas.

Anyone who successfully proves they are in a long-term marriage or de facto relationship (3 years or more, or 2 years with a child) will be granted a permanent visa (subclass 801 or subclass 100) after the application is assessed. Meaning they don’t have to wait two years and they don’t have to lodge stage 2 of the application.
